BOOMS

The municipality is bordered to the south by the Restigouche River where the river widens before emptying into the Bay of Chaleur.

From the shore, we can see the booms that were used during the log drive. These booms are piles of rocks encased in enormous wood crates. They were used to retain the logs that were floated down the river in the spring during what was called the log drive.

These logs were cut in the forests further inland during the winter and sent down the river during the spring. The high water levels and the swift current carried the logs to the estuary adjacent Restigouche South East where they were loaded onto barges and transported to the different sawmills on both sides of the river.

The log drive was abandoned in the early 1970s in favour of logging trucks.
