LEGENDARY RESIDENT

Richard Adams

Restigouche South East's most illustrious resident is Richard Adams, a well-known fishing guide. Over the years, Richard Adams has become a legend in the Matapedia Valley partly because of the personalities he guided but also because of his good nature and down-to-earth approach to life. Many people encountered him while he hitch-hiked in the region. He guided until the age of 94, proof that he thoroughly enjoyed his work and the rivers. The Corporation de gestion des rivières Matapedia et Patapédia (corporation that manages the Matapedia and Patapedia rivers) has established a foundation named after him www.cgrmp.com to raise money for Atlantic Salmon research and habitat protection.

Mr. Adams was born in the Sillarsville area of Restigouche South East on October 13, 1910. His parents, Hudson Adams and Mina Pratt, had nine children. At the age of 12, young Richard began guiding fishermen at Thomas Rand's camp as a bowman, a job that disappeared with the advent of motorized canoes. Two years later, he headed into the forest to cut trees and haul logs. It was hard work that began in October and ended in the spring with the log drive. The only break was at Christmas. Mr. Adams worked for a number of years in the forest, and eventually became a manager. During the summers, he worked as a guide at the Matamajaw Salmon Club in Causapscal. Among others, he guided R.J. Cullen, the president of International Papers, an important forestry company. He also guided former United States president Jimmy Carter.

Richard Adams passed away on March 3, 2006 in Matapedia.
